Rough Trade Shops was born out of punk and post-punk in the late1970s with the original company comprising both the store and the record label. This two entities split in the early1980s as the label was becoming much bigger than the store due to successes with The Smiths, Scritti Politti and more.
In more recent years, Rough Trade Shops has welcomed a new set of customers thanks to the resurgence in popularity for vinyl. Alongside that, we have seen huge changes in how people purchase and experience music. Our business has moved from selling music as a utility to music as an experience and as such our stores have become more rounded encompassing live music, bars and a wider product mix including books and hardware. In addition to this, huge increases in demand for E-Commerce sales mean that despite the disruption caused by COVID-19 we have managed to maintain strong sales with more focus on our E-Commerce operation to drive the majority of our sales.
Managing a business with such complexity and low margins is tough so we look to our finance operation to be lean and give us valuable insights into how our business is doing and what decisions to make. Our relationship with 10CA over the years has empowered this thanks to timely and accurate advice.
In recent years we have made a lot of improvements to our finance function to make the department more efficient through better use of data, using automation and cloud services where possible. After a period of review, we concluded that we should consider moving our accounts from Sage to a more modern system that empowered us to achieve our aims and integrated better with our systems.

When considering whether to change systems, often trepidation around the migration is one of the biggest challenges so I can't tell you what a relief it was to have this managed so expertly!
Since achieving the migration to Xero we have realised huge benefits. We have seen tangible improvements in the time it takes us to process invoices thanks to the improved integration with Receipt Bank. In addition, we are unlocking lots of value from our finance data from the improved reporting and dash boarding. It also ensures that tasks are easier to delegate which is critical in a small team, and crucially in this time, it has empowered our finance team to work from home with no impact on the business. If we hadn't achieved a smooth transition, we would be in a tough position given the impact of COVID-19!
